Our recent trip to Marmaris, Türkiye, was an adventure filled with ups and downs. From hotel hiccups to breathtaking scenery and unique excursions, our journey had a bit of everything. Here’s a detailed account of our Marmaris experience.

A Rocky Start with Hotel Overbooking

Our trip started with an unexpected twist. Upon arrival, we discovered that our hotel was overbooked. We were transferred to a sister hotel for a few nights, which unfortunately didn’t match the standards we had hoped for. The only redeeming qualities were the cold beers and refreshing iced tea. Once we finally checked into our intended hotel, the stunning views of the mountains over the sea made up for the initial inconvenience.

Excursions: Dalyan Cruise, Turtle Beach & Mud Baths

One of the highlights of our trip was the Dalyan Cruise, which offered a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. Here’s a breakdown of our day:

  • Cruising the Lycian Coast: We sailed along the Lycian Coast, admiring the ancient rock-cut tombs of the Kings of Kaunos. The sight of these historic monuments carved into the cliffs was truly awe-inspiring.
  • Mud Baths of Dalyan: We then wallowed in the famous mud baths of Dalyan. It was a fun and unique experience, and our skin felt incredibly smooth afterward.
  • Turtle Beach: Our cruise took us to Turtle Beach, renowned for its loggerhead turtles. Seeing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat was a memorable experience.
  • Dalyan Canal: The journey continued with a boat ride down the Dalyan Canal, surrounded by lush scenery and serene waters.

Marmaris Horse Safari

For a touch of adventure, we embarked on a horse safari. Riding through the scenic landscapes of Marmaris was a unique and enjoyable experience, offering a different perspective of the region’s natural beauty.

Strolling the Promenade

Marmaris’ promenade is a fantastic place for a leisurely walk. Lined with numerous bars and restaurants, it’s the perfect spot to chill out, enjoy live performances, and unwind after a day of exploring. Most of these bars and restaurants put on live acts and entertainment, so keep an ear and eye out for shows. During our strolls, we witnessed flamenco dancers, African drumming, and many more fun performances. The atmosphere is lively and welcoming, catering well to the needs of tourists.

Culinary Delights and Local Markets

Food in Marmaris is a Brit’s paradise, with many establishments catering specifically to British holidaymakers. From full English breakfasts to traditional Turkish cuisine, there’s something for everyone.

The town is also dotted with sellers offering authentic Turkish delight and market stalls where you can find look-alike brand name products. It’s a great place for some light shopping and to pick up souvenirs.

Evening Entertainment: Dancing Fountains

One of the must-see attractions in Marmaris is the dancing fountains. By night, these fountains come alive with a spectacular light and music show, creating a magical atmosphere that’s perfect for an evening stroll.

Final Thoughts and Tips

While Marmaris has its charms, it might not be for everyone. Here are a few tips based on our experience:

  • Expect the Unexpected: Be prepared for potential hiccups like hotel overbookings. Stay flexible and try to make the best of the situation.
  • Enjoy the All-Inclusive Experience: If you enjoy all-inclusive resorts, daily night shows, shopping, and British-style breakfasts, Marmaris is an excellent choice.
  • Adventure Awaits: For adventure seekers, Marmaris can serve as a good base to explore the wider region. There are plenty of excursions and activities to keep you entertained.

Although Marmaris might not be our usual destination of choice, it offered a mix of experiences that we’ll remember. Whether you’re looking for relaxation or adventure, this coastal town has something to offer every traveller.
